----------------------------------------------Crime Documentary Opening-----------------------------------------

(I can't find the same video and thumbnail, there's a show with the same exact name)

Documentary Opening 1: (The worst roommate ever)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

  • An in-depth analysis of “The Worst Roommate Ever” the whos whats whens wheres and whys. Why is she implied to be the worst roommate ever

  • The picture of the woman with a mugshot-esque camera angle suggests law enforcement was involved and the situation was serious enough to warrant an arrest of some sort. The woman also looks frail, unclean and with an expressionless face signifying a very serious situation.

  • How the situation was before she got the title of “Worst roommate ever” how it began to spiral out of control and a brief showing of all characters involved.

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

  • Young adults to adults with roommates, considering that the main situation are between roommates and they are both adults while one of them has a child.

  • The camera usage was deliberately used to increase suspense within the audience with shots of the front door in the middle of the night with a singular light illuminating it making it look less mundane and more of a gates to hell

  • The color grading was using blues and blacks this makes the audience feel scared and makes the light contrast low making it darker and humans all through out history has always been scared of what lies in the darkness of the unknown

  • The editing was a lot of cuts to cram as much exposition and context to the audience as possible so that they will get interested and hooked in the story. They also showed shots of the past and the narration says how evil and depraved things here roommate has done making the audience crave more information of that happened to her, to her child and what ultimately happened to her roommate in the end

  • The overuse of loud bombastic suspenseful sound effects and music distils a sense of dread and horror within the audience and sudden booms and fast cuts makes it suspenseful

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

  • On the whole if I had the time I would seems cool and I want to know

Documentary Opening 2: (What jennifer did)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

  • Documenting what Jennifer did and why it’s either good or bad i expect the tone to be shocking and suspenseful with mysterious undertones

  • The thumbnail has an old photograph texture to it meaning that it’s old and rustic the half and half of her face meaning a change is attitude or situation with the monotone facial expression in a red color filter signifying bad and anger

  • Who or why or what Jennifer did and what got her to this point and how she changed based on the split emotion thumbnail

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

  • Teenagers to young adults to parents because the main antagonist or protagonist is a teenager with their parents heavily involved within the case which would inturn intices parents to watch this

  • The camera has many close up shots of the house hold with the voice over of the 911 distress call from Jennifer with the operator giving the audience an experience feeling that they were there at the night of the call with a close up of a framed photo of Jennifer reminding the audience of who's the documentary about

  • The police cars dotted everywhere around the introduction of the documentary making the audience feel like this footage was recorded on the scene or on the day the call happened making the audience feel it in real time and making the response feel serious and intense with police officials on the scene

  • Quick cuts of the crime scene with bullet holes everywhere with the audio of the 911 distress call over it signals to the audience that these quick cuts of the crime scene are what happened the exact moment this part of the call was recorded which gives the audience a sense of the magnitude of how serious and deadly the attack was on Jennifer's family

  • The sound design of the intro is quite impressive, I really liked how the real 911 call with quick cuts and flashes of the crime scene was also integrated to show the audience the sequence of events unfolding as the call goes on, which I think is really cool

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

  • Honestly I wouldn’t watch this documentary since this one is too small scale for my liking, but it’s certainly well made.

Documentary Opening 3: (Deadly American Marriage)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

  • Judging from the thumbnail alone it has an old photo of the couple who I presume are newlywed because they are in their wedding outfits on. An interesting note is that the wife isn’t seen to be smiling but the husband is that could elude that the wife within the photo is the culprit, or the murderer. I expect a thorough explanation on why the photo was shown and why the title is the way it is and if the culprit got caught.

  • The typeface they used for the title of “Deadly American Marriage" is very angular and used in a lot of professional media within the documentary genre, typically crime and such, to convey a sense of professionalism and taking the story they are going to tell within the documentary and one they respect the continuity of and to tell the truth of what happened

  • An interview with the investigator involved in the case. Audio of the real 911 call over real/recreated crime scenes to connect what the caller is talking about with physical evidence of the scene using visual storytelling.

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

  • Married people/adults/young adults because the story revolves around the marriage between two adults, and what horrific tragedy befell their spouse. To know how this happens and how to prevent it within their own marriages

  • The extreme wide shots of presumably the families house with the eerie after work hours lighting gives the audience a sense of unease and tension with the call/interview in the background.

  • The lighting for the investigator interview was phenomenal I really liked how it looked with all the blue and light illuminating her face so that the audience can clearly tell what she’s saying and that is the focal point of those sections

  • I think the sound was typical of this genre of documentary. The authentic 911 call over sets recreated from the real crime scene with booming sound effects to hook the viewer in with how shocking the prior information is.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

  • Honestly I wouldn’t watch it unless It was for a media studies thing because, I’m not at the age or situation where this film would entice me to watch it.

Documentary Opening 4: (Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

  • The thumbnail shows what looks like the main subjects of this crime documentary and their headshots on a bulletin board with their names written on tape. This signifies that the two are already under heavy investigation from law enforcement I expect a lot of police and detectives on the scene with digging for clues and motives

  •  The font is very common use within this genre of documentaries, with serious bold and very angular with worn white as the color gives a photo texture to them as it is in the middle of being investigated

  • Investigators talking, 911 calls reporting about the situation, news programs alerting the public, and lots of police doing police things

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

  • I think the target audience are adults and middle age people as the subjects fall under those parameters because the main focus of a media product tend to be the ones watching it

  • There’s a lot of far away zoomed in footage of cops and buildings. This lets the viewer know how large scale this whole investigation is and how important that this person gets sent to justice with all the footage of law enforcement.

  • There’s a lot of past footage of the suspects which signals to the audience of how far they have gone or how well they have hid their sadistic tendencies for so long. The quality of the footage also gives hints of the time period of the crime happening

  • The sound used was a voice over of an investigator and what I see to be a relative of one of the suspects with their narration context is given to how the suspects act and how different things have gone

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

  • Sure it seems interesting and I like when the investigation spans the whole country and gives insight to how the wider public feels about the situation at the time

Documentary Opening 5: (American Murder: Gabby Petito)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

  • The thumbnail looks like an ordinary photo of a woman in the Australian outback or some outback, enjoying the sun and fresh wide air, I expect some juxtaposition with how their lifestyle is portrayed and the reality of the situation

  • The juxtaposition between the thumbnail picture and the title typeface and it’s contents with the happy image and the gruesome title with the typical typeface but this time a change to the subjects name to emphasize their role in the story

  • A happy couple in the beginning of their relationship, then slowly turning sour and bitter then bloody as time goes on

After You Watch

Who is the target audience?
Why do you think so?

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

  • I think the target audience for this documentary is young adults to late teenagers because that’s what the main subjects age range seems to be, and I think they would be interested in this because it’s about a relationship turning deadly.

  • The camera work is clearly sloppy with a handheld found footage type of look to them, which makes sense since she’s the one recording this vlog with her significant other.

  • The lighting is very bright. This is to signify that there are shadows under the light meaning that however happy one may seem, darkness and malice are always within their light.

  • The editing is pretty bog standard. I noticed that the producers of this documentary didn’t use much crime scene recreation for their footage and just mostly used  body cameras. Which signals to the audience that law enforcement are hot on this case and are very serious with what they are dealing with.

Would you continue watching?

Why/Why not?

  • I would watch this documentary since I think it’s a lot more relevant considering that it centers around social media and how people portray themselves on their and how they manipulate their own image to see what others want them to see, which I think is pretty cool.
