Research: Genre

This Is My Research: Genre for my Comp 1

Django Unchained (2012)

Produced by: A Band Apart Columbia Pictures

Distributed by: The Weinstein Company

Genre/Sub genre: Western/Revenge Movie

What Sub genre does it conform to?
Django unchained conforms to crime movies because it portrays crimes being committed by criminals unlawfully. In addition to racism which by genre theory first thought of by Steve Neil the use of racist terms and old timey themes makes it distinct enough to garner it's own audience but similar enough to be in a genre.

What conventions does it subvert?
it subverts the typical western movie by portraying the era in a very unsavory manner with all the slavery and blood shed and distasteful aspects, as in heavy violence. The hero of the story is not a cowboy doing cowboy things. This movie also subverts the typical hero role while Django receives assistance from Dr. King Schultz, the film ultimately emphasizes Django's agency and growth, subverting the typical savior narrative by positioning him as the primary force driving his own liberation. Traditionally, Westerns often excluded Black characters, typically portraying them in subservient roles. Django Unchained flips this by centering a Black protagonist, Django who seeks liberation and revenge against white oppressors.

What representation are there?
Representations include but not limited too African American, American, German, slaves and Colonel Sanders (aka Big Daddy)

What technical elements are used to give meaning to the representation?
There was this one scene in the movie where the 2 main characters traveled to a plantation to retrieve one of the slaves and when they arrived the owner of the place Spencer Gordon Bennet or Big Daddy as he is referred too in the movie is talking to the protagonists on a balcony and the camera angles were high angle and low angle for Gordon and Dr king Schultz respectively implying that the owner of the plantation has a lot of power in this here land and the protagonists are under his rules.

Goodfellas (1990)

Produces by: Warner Bros. Pictures

Distributed by: Warner Bros. Pictures

Genre/Sub genre: Crime/Drama

What Sub genre does it conform to?
Goodfellas Conforms to the subgenre of Crime/Drama movies which in this video portrays them wearing typical mafia ensue outfits while driving a typical vehicle of the era and movie because in Steve Neil's theory a media text must be similar enough to be set within a genre while also be different enough to get people to watch it.

What conventions does it subvert?
Goodfellas subverts the run of the mill crime movie which in this video portrays at first the main characters on a ride down a dark highway and you probably think "oh they're a bunch of goodfellas" but then a weird sound comes from the trunk and they pull over to see what's up then a suspenseful scene of them building up the courage to open the trunk then suddenly a bloody man wrapped in a sort of tarp is reviled successfully subverting the audience's expectations and making them think "woah these aren't very goodfellas" and the plot of the movie is also uncommon being a normal person rising up the ranks of the mafia and the trials and tribulations that come with it, in Steve Neil's Theory  Genre theory a film must be distinct enough to give people a reason to watch it while also similar enough to be within a set genre.

What representation are there?
Representation in this movie goes as expected an American mobster and Italian mobsters to name a few

What technical elements are used to give meaning to the representation?
During the scene where the Goodfellas opened the trunk of their car and saw that their victim is still alive the camera angle gets a high medium angle shot on him making the audience subconsciously say that that man is weak and a not a threat and I mean look at him he's basically dead and it there for shows that our characters is in power in that scenario.

ATTENTION ATTENTION
THE RESEARCH UNDER THIS RED TEXT IS NOW
SMALL RESEARCH

The Godfather (1972)

Target audience and how are the appealed too?
The target audience is gonna be people who like these kind of movies, or a more mature audience with this opening scene it has a lot of people talking making it more grounded and the lack of music in this scene would really exemplify the importance of the dialogue.

What would you like to use in your opening scene from this?
My team mate Arnold which is the Creative Director has explicitly stated that he would want to implement similar dialogue to that from The Godfather since is it vary similar to what he envision the final product of the opening scene would be

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
We would like to avoid plagiarism and copying the opening scene of the Godfather too much to avoid this we would shoot in a more dark unformal setting like a storage place or the back of a building.

Bad Boys: Ride or die (2024)

Target audience and how are the appealed too?
The target audience based on this scene is for people who like action comedy movies "are those dogs fresh?" this line from the movie tells the audience that the character would like to eat a dog, but that's not right? what he actually means that are those hotdogs fresh the audience yet does not know why he said it in this manner, to save time? to be cool? to ask for a dog with relish and mustard on it? we may never know.

What would you like to use in your opening scene from this?
My group would like to use the robber attempting to rob this convenance store with a lot more dialogue and a lot less "are those dogs fresh" we are not gonna use fresh dogs instead we are gonna use a lot more guns and guns doing gun things.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
I have a deep suspicion in side myself that my team would be heavily apposed to add the line "are those dogs fresh" into our final opening scene as we intend on the opening scene to be more dramatic, thematic and cinematic and other words that end in matic.

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Target audience and how are the appealed too?
The target audience for this scene of Reservoir Dogs fits quite well with our intended target audience as well, as we are intending to have a more serious tone with more grounded characters as portrayed in this scene provided.

What would you like to use in your opening scene from this?
Our Creative Director Arnold was adamant about adding a scene where a person from a rival family would be captured and their captures would try to goin info from him and I think it would be a good idea since it is vary reminiscent of actual mafia crime movies.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?
From this opening scene we would like to not involve any violence on screen since Cambridge
really does not like that and likes to regulate creativity this can be seen as an allegory to real life where big business snuffs our any creativity and soul our of anything. another thing we would not like to add to our video is that the title Reservoir Dogs does not have any dogs in this scene despite the title and there is no "are those dogs fresh" line in the Reservoir Dogs movie.

Breaking Bad Season 5 Episode 8 (1992)

Target audience and how are the appealed too?
The target audience is probably older folk that can handle this sort of violence shown on screen

This video introduced me to the 6 ways that movie opening scenes could be created and my group decided to pick

This part was the part I dreaded since it was a lot of thinking and writing and critical thinking and analysis but in the end I think I did pretty well even though I didn't finish it I feel really satisfied and proud with what I wrote for Goodfellas (1990) please re read it to see why

Research: Audience

This is our research into our audience it's pretty cool I think

Research: Industry

This Is My Research: Industry For My Comp 1 Project.

Preliminary Research

This is my Weekly Progress and Plan for Comp 1

What Production Company are we picking?:

I was suggesting to pick A24 to be the production company but in the end my team decided to not go with that idea, because A24 has a vary district movie style that is consistent with a lot of their movies and it's hard to replicate and it limits our creativity and vision of our project.

Our team has decided to go with LIONSGATE since they produced movies what we are targeting in the form of style and tone like American Psycho

What other content do they produce?

Lionsgate produces movies like American Psycho

What are your thoughts on the video you have just watched?

Film

Genre/Genre Conventions

How did this scene introduce characters, settings and create intrigue?

What did you like/dislike about the intro?

EXTRACTION II 2023

Action

Fight, explosion, GUNS, Men, Women, Fighting, bullets, military

The movie starts with credits then small snippets of the movie with thor getting shot in the neck and a woman shouting his name tyler which tells the audience what his name is then a cut to his body falling of a bridge and sinking into the river and then a girl spots his body the shortly there after military men gathers his body and resuscitate him and then a helicopter takes his body to a proper hospital

I liked this intro because it shows the hero or maybe not getting defeated or for a lack of a better word shot and then falls I like that about the intro and then it stops

Pamali Dusun Pocong 2023

Horror. Scary creature, stupid friends, dead bodies, blood, gore, cosmic horror, ghosts, dark lighting, scary songs

The opening scene introduces a man digging a grave and then shows a dead body wrapped in cloth with blood stains and then the scene turns to the dead body that shows it has growths and scars and big signs of infection and then buries the body and then shows the man with the same infection on his leg

I respected the movie for not using a cheap jumpscare in the intro so props to them. I also liked it because of the eerie atmosphere and how it invokes so many questions about the bodies and the man and the whistling is vary scary also

Uglies 2024

Sci Fi. laser guns, pew pews, futuristic tech, robots, space, spaceships, men, women, hydroponics

The movie opens with a backstory of the world, where natural resources were all used up but then the scientists made a truly renewable energy source but oh no human nature is still out and about and then people science the human nature away but only when their 16 womp womp

I HATE this movie kind of, the intro didn’t reel me in and the title wasn’t doing it any favours either the beginning was very generic with humans using all the energy and then war n stuff

(500) days of summer 2009

Romance, boy, girl, man, woman, love, sad music, happy music, crying,

It introduces the characters and makes the audience hooked by showing contrast of character between the man and his love interest and the mention of an old film grounds the movie in a date in time

I like the credits and it’s symbolism and the music sounding home made with no professional experience quite elegantly portrays the youth full innocence of the film

Johnny english 2003

Comedy. Epic funny moments, laughing, big hahas all around, jokes,

The movie starts with a dream sequence of johnny english getting freaky with an enemy the gets out of the dream, and agent one is introduced and dies immediately after then the rest of the agents dies then johnny english is hired to be agent one and does

I liked the intro since it depicts the comedy and tone of the movie almost instantly and johnny english’s personality perfectly

After my team evaluated their choices we have ultimately decided upon the genres Crime/Drama

because we have a lot of ideas that fit within the boundaries of these genres.

Weekly Progress + Plan

This is my Weekly Progress + Plan for Comp 1

Week 1:

This week I got into my group and I think this time it will be great since we have big ideas that sound vary promising and Arnold seems to know his way around this, I'm also vary exited for this particular project since it's something that allows a lot more creativity and freedom in terms of audience and things you can show and do. This week I also studied and researched about media Industries and stages that a media product goes through like Producer, Distributor and Exhibitor which it basically the 3 stages of production in business terms

Week 2:

This week we didn't really do that much but we mostly hone in on what genre we're gonna do and what conventions of that genre/sub genre does it have what does it subvert and what technical elements does it use to portray characters.

Week 3:

This week did research about what topic/genre our movie project is gonna be by doing 2 big researches and 6 small researches. it was a good time watching movies. wooo hooo movies.... Yeah Science!

Week 4:

This week we made the statement of intent and my group did a serviceable job doing so covering a lot of ground in the process but we need too iron some edges out. we also learned about synergies which is when 2 media companies collaborate to the benefit of each other. and used the example of James bond

Week 5:

This week we worked on the planning of our movie intro as in screen play which we are going to work on in the future as it is not as necessary as per say script and storyboard which is where we are putting most of our effort on at this moment  \

Week 6:

This week we have been having project lessons all week so that we can finish our short opening for a movie and everything that has to be done before that like storyboard which is my job filming and editing which is arnolds job and shooting scout which is panji and Sagara is behind the scenes and emotional support. The deadline is closing in and I'm quite worried about that because we don't really have anything with substance that isn't just planning to show

Week 7:

This week we just do a boat load of project lessons because our progress wasn't as expected

Final CCR

Week 1:

This week had an emphasis on editing, the whole class had a task about recreating a movie scene  my group decided on recreating a scene from the movie fight club

Week 2:

We had a task about continuity editing where the teacher gave us a bunch of clips and tasked us too make a continuity editing of those clips in pairs me and my teammate in my opinion we did great, this week our group was also tasked with making a film schedule

Week 3:

this week we did a lot of things including a lot of theory lessons learning theories from feminist from feminists like van zoonen, mervey and butler arguing about female representation in media and the effects of the male dominated media industry on public consciousness. We also learned about audience theories like cultivation theory, reception theory, desensitization theory and social learning theory

Week 4:

This week we only had 1 lesson which was a project lesson where we worked on editing the video and working on the typeface and font of the movie for more imbedded meaning and goodie goodie, where me and sagara worked on the typeface and font for the majority of the time and panji was working on behind the scenes and arnold was working on editing

Week 5:

Week 5 was a national holiday for the whole week, I did some of the work at home

Week 6:

This week some was online since there were difficult weather conditions this is where we started to work on our CCR 1 and 2 online through ZOOM and after the school opened again we started to make the google forum for audience feedback to hone in on what we need improving and also to finalize the title and font of our movie

Week 7:

This week we started to work on CCR 3 and 4 while also doing our first mock test in preparation for the exams which in my opinion I think I did pretty good for a first try idk I'll see when the scores are out, the CCRs are vary important to get done at least the mock test proved to be difficult to manage whole also trying to finish our blog with our final product still being in development

Week 8:

This week I only got Thursday to work on stuff since I had to go to a funeral in my village and missed 3 days and a mock test I have to quickly work on my blog and CCRs but arnold who is our editor is still working on editing the video he says it'll be done this week

Week 9:

This week was very eventful to say the least as all the cans that we were kicking down the road, we are now feeling the effects of as arnold our editor and director failed to meet deadlines which prevented us from progressing through our CCRs and when he did finish it our teacher said this shit ass (an over exaggeration), and we have to redo a lot of the clips we will try shooting after, we also have lots of mock tests to do also which compounded our misfortune.

Week 10: DEADLINE DUN! DUN!! DUN!!!

DEAD LINE WEEK this was a huge event since for the last week me and 2 of my teammates got together and pick ourselves up by our bootstraps, and to GET IT DONE. I was delegated to main editor because of circumstance, and me and 2 of my teammates made more progress within this 1 week then we did in 4+ months, which we were really proud of by our hard work, we even got done our ccrs which was a miracle and gave us a huge sigh of relief.
